How to Start Homeschooling

Quick and to the point information to help you get started

STEP 1 FIND YOUR STATE

Each state has different laws and regulations on homeschooling. Theses regulations range from low to moderate. Know what they are before you get started so you can stay compliant.

STEP 2 KNOW THE SUBJECTS YOU WANT TO TEACH

You can skip this step depending on the state you live in. States with little to no regulations do not require for you to send in a subjects list of what you plan on teaching. Most states however, do require you to atleast turn in a NOI. This is a NOTICE OF INTENT to homeschool document that each homeschooling parent must fill out and turn into the superintendant of your school district. If you are required to submit a subjects taught document, figure out what you want to teach your child and add a seperate document to the NOI. Some NOI documents may have a spot for adding subjects. Even if you are in a state that does not require any notification, you still may want to figure out what you plan on teaching your kids so you both are better prepared.

If you're still unsure or confused of what you need to do to get started, check out HSLDA Homeschool Legal Defence Association. This organization is very resourceful, advocates for homeschoolers and represents homeschoolers in legal allegations should they evolve. You must have a membership to get legal representation, however, they offer free information regarding homeschooling. This is a great resource.

STEP 3 SUBMIT YOUR NOTICE OF INTENT

Once you have found a Notice of Intent form for your state, follow directions on where to submit your form. Usually it is your local school districts superintendant. You can do this by mailing a document or walking it into the office. When you mail it, be sure to mail it certified so that you can get a confirmation on its delivery. This way you have documentation that you did your part should any issues arise. Most states require that you atleast meet certain qualifications to homeschool your child. When you fill out the NOI you will be required to show proof of your qualifications. Do not let this scare you. There are several options and they vary by state. The most common option is that you atleast have a highschool diploma. Make sure you know what your state's requirements are in STEP 1.

STEP 4 START HOMESCHOOLING

You can start homeschooling whenever you want. Since you are in control of your childs education you have the freedom to choose when you start. Some families homeschool all year with shorter days. Some families follow the public school schedule. Some families school off and on all year having breaks in between. It's whatever works for your family. There's freedom in homeschooling!!!

I hope this helps you to get started and many blessings to you on your homeschool journey!!!!
